Swan This Day: March 12 2005 - Gurney, Lambert & Holt score in 2-2 draw

On this day nine years ago...

Swansea (Gurney, Holt OG) 2 - 2 Rochdale (Holt, Lambert)

It seems history does repeat itself a touch. Two days ago we looked back at a game from 2007 where Trundle managed to get on the scoresheet as well as the referee seeing fit to send him off, and today we're looking back at another match where he managed to get himself dismissed.

What's quite remarkable about this match is the strike force Rochdale had out. Rickie Lambert & Grant Holt have both famously been promoted with Southampton & Norwich respectively, and as much as the Swans having a midfield of Leon, Bodde & Pratley in League One was ridiculous you feel Rochdale possessing those two lads up front in League Two really was bordering on daft - given how their careers have panned out.

The match itself saw Holt open the scoring (his 22nd of the season) on the half hour mark, before six minutes later Trundle saw red for a two-footed tackle. Straight from the restart however, Rochdale's Paul Tait was also sent off after seeming to strike Kevin McLeod.

That seemed to calm things down until half time, but the game exploded to life in the second half. Andy Gurney equalised when he cut inside from the right and smashed one across goal, and with that goal coming in the 46th minute the Swans then found themselves level by the 53rd. With Rochdale defending a corner, Holt headed into his own net and the hosts were ahead.

With the game seemingly won, Rochdale snatched an equaliser through Rickie Lambert in injury time. According to the match reports I've found online it was the result of "poor defending" (though none elaborated further), and the game ended 2-2.
